Staffs Gents

Barby CC Hosts the Imps for the First Time

On his 39th birthday, Rob Field exploited a superb batting surface at his home club Barby to its fullest extent, to lead the Imps to an 83 run win over the Staffs Gents.

Field's career high 156 included two sixes and 25 fours, and came from 176 balls. He shared in a first wicket partnership of 70 with Ian Powick (21), before adding 53 for the second wicket with Joel Gleghorn (23), and 98 for the fifth wicket with the captain (30*).

The Staffs Gents came with a useful side, including players from both the Derbyshire and North Staffs and Cheshire Premier Leagues, but Field's powerful display dominated the day.

79 runs from the final ten overs enabled a declaration at 264 for five from 56 overs, during which opening bowlers Spruce and Chamberlain got the most from the pacy surface.

Left handers Coughlan (52) and Thompstone (28) got the Gents' reply away to a speedy start, adding 89 for the first wicket in 18 overs. However, good post-tea spells from Harborne duo Chris Fowell (three for 65), who seemed to have recovered from the trauma of being belted repeatedly into Birdland at Bourton two years ago, and Pottsie (one for 30 from eight), applied the brakes, and claimed crucial top order scalps.

This left Wynnie to bowl a tidy but wicketless spell at one end, while Match Manager Thommo cleaned up with his occasional off spin at the other, with four for 25.

Will Sinclair returned to apply the coup de grace, and the Imps were victorious with three overs in hand.

The Imps' first visit to Barby CC was a huge success, thanks to their tireless efforts. The hospitality, catering, facilities and ground were all superb; it is to be hoped we can return next year.
